Spirit Totem

Spirit Totem, also known as the Anansi Totem, is a mystical object that allows the user to tap into the life force of animals, essentially allowing them to harness their abilities. It is currently owned by Mari McCabe.

It was said to have been created by the trickster god Anansi for the warrior Tantu. It is one of six other mystical Zambesi totems presented to the great tribes. After the people of Zambesi faced numerous attacks from their neighbors and nature itself, they prayed for protection. Their prayers were answered as the five great tribes were each presented a mystical totem harnessing a power of each elemental forces. A tribe was presented the Spirit Totem. It harnesses the ashe, or lifeforce of the animal kingdom. After being wielded by her grandmother and mother, the totem was passed down to Amaya Jiwe sometime in the 1930s.

Zambesi Village was a village located in the M'Changa Province of Zambesi, an African country of the same name. It was destroyed by the warlord Benatu Eshu, and its ruins are currently uninhabited. Inhabitants of the village guarded the Anansi Totem for many generations after it was gifted to their warrior Tantu by the spider-god Anansi. The next guardian of the totem was chosen when they were very young.

Sometime prior to 1863, an unnamed woman was born in the village before being sold into slavery. She passed on the knowledge and traditions of the village to her daughter, Mary; while enslaved on the Collins Plantation, Mary encountered a guardian of the Totem, Amaya Jiwe, who freed her and several of her fellow slaves.

Many years later, Kuasa considered it her duty to continue protecting the village, though it remained empty. Kuasa kidnapped Mari and brought her back to Zambesi in order to take the Totem, which was now bonded to Mari. After successfully taking the Totem, Kuasa was worshiped by locals until Mari, encouraged by the Totem's spirits, was able to reclaim it.

Totems of Zambesi

Totems of Zambesi

Hundreds of years ago, the six tribes of Zambesi were under attack. They prayed to the gods for help and their prayers were answered. Each tribe was given a totem to protect it, each with a different elemental power to aid in the defense of the tribes; Air, Water, Fire, Earth, Spirit, and Death. When combined, the totems' powers can be used to create a powerful weapon, "something pure."

List of Totems
  • Anansi Totem : This totem allows the user to summon the ashe of any animal that's ever lived and wield the abilities of the summoned animal. At one point, Damien Darhk stole it from Amaya Jiwe, the twentieth-century version of the hero Vixen, although she later got it back. In the twenty-first century, it’s in the possession of Mari and Kuasa, Amaya's granddaughters.
  • Air Totem : This totem allows the user to generate and manipulate wind. It is currently in the possession of Zari Tomaz.
  • Water Totem : This totem allows the user generate and manipulate water. It was incinerated along with Kuasa's body the first time she died and is the only totem whose physical form is known to have ever been completely destroyed. However, on her resurrection, it appears that the totem's powers have bonded with Kuasa, allowing her to use the powers the totem grants without wearing the totem itself, although the reason for this may be that Mallus enhanced the powers she'd had when she died, so that she could use them without a totem, as was the case after Damien Darhk was resurrected. After Kuasa betrayed the Darhks and helped the Legends; reclaiming the Anansi Totem from Nora and returning it to Amaya; Nora used her magic to draw the Water Totem's powers out of Kuasa's body, re-forming the totem, killing Kuasa in the process. It was initially used by Ray Palmer in the Legends first attempt to use all six of the totems against Mallus individually after the demon broke free of his temporal prison. Wally West used it later during the team's two attempts to combine the powers of all six of the totems to conjure something capable of defeating Mallus. It's currently in Kuasa's possession.
  • Fire Totem : This totem allows the user to generate and control fire. It was used by Mick Rory, first to combat the Mallus-possessed Death Totem-powered Sara Lance, and again when combining its powers with those of the other five totems to take down Mallus. It's currently in Kuasa’s possession.
  • Earth Totem : This totem allows the user to control the earth. It was used by Nate Heywood to take down Mallus. It is currently in Kuasa’s possession.
  • Death Totem : This totem allows the user to have dominion over the dead. The tribe which originally had possession of this totem allied themselves with Mallus when the other five tribes worked to imprison him; for that reason, that tribe, and the Death Totem itself, were long since lost to history. It was used by Sara Lance when the Legends combined the totems' powers to destroy Mallus. It's currently in Kuasa's possession.
